How Stained Glass Lamp Bases Are Designed

!±8± How Stained Glass Lamp Bases Are Designed

Are you in the market for a new lamp? Do you want to get one that is matchless in terms of design and originality? Stained glass lamp bases are definitely a good selection for you to consider. Bases crafted of these material are designed to match the glass lamp shades that further accentuate the bases in most cases. Some lamps however, have a beautiful stained glass base accentuated by a plain lamp shade; these types of lamps are best for drawing more attention to the colorful lamp base. Still other types made of stained glass are fashioned in the shape of different animals.

Tiffany designs stained glass lamp bases, shades, and bases shaped like different animals. The accent lamps designed by Tiffany come in the shape of animals like cats, butterflies, turtles, elephants, snails, roosters, frogs, exotic birds, swans, lions, peacocks, dogs, owls, and more. Meanwhile some bases are in the shape of figurines and objects like fans, teapots, Christmas trees, snowmen, fairies, illuminated pitchers, lanterns, churches, and Christian crosses.

Stained glass lamp bases are designed with specific color themes that are worked throughout the lamp and matching shade. Some colors are cool and vibrant while others are warm and romantic. The Glass is nestled between thick black outlines of metal which give the glass a semi-mosaic effect.

The shape of the bases will clearly vary just as the colors in every product differ. Even if you were to put two of the same make stained items side by side you would be able to immediately see differences in color, shade, and color intensity. Basically, you are getting a one of a kind design when you are buying a lamp with a stain glassed base or shade. Whether you opt for a figurine type base or a more traditional tall or short cylindrical base, you will discover that these lamps will be attractive additions to every room in your home.

Stained glass lamp bases are a great investment because these lamps are easy to maintain. If you get a base or a shade crafted of stain glass, all you need to do is to unplug the lamp to clean the glass components of the lamp with a soft cloth and glass cleaner. Unlike lamp shades with fabric, glass lamps and shades are far easier to keep dust free, clean, and beautiful looking.

Cleaning Stained Glass Properly

!±8± Cleaning Stained Glass Properly

Cleaning stained glass when it becomes dirty, allows the maximum amount of light to pass through it and thus maintains its beauty.

Comprised of several different colors and shapes of favrile glass, the beauty of this glass depends on the light it receives and transmits. The amount of the light and the direction that it hits the glass can constantly change the appearance of the artwork. Keep your stained glass table lamps and floor lamps and window hangings, chandeliers and wall sconces looking their best to show off their original colors.

Handcrafted from favrile glass, a form of glass patented by Louis Tiffany in 1894. The glass is held together with copper and solder, and cleaning products containing vinegar, ammonia, or any acid base destroys the solder holding the glass together.

Before cleaning any lampshade or fixture, disconnect the power source (unplug from outlets).

Normal Cleaning

Light dusting with a feather duster or wipe with a clean dry cloth is all that is usually needed.

Grimy Stained Glass

For a grimy fixture, place a small dab of lemon-based furniture polish on soft clean cloth and wipe gently. Never apply the polish directly to the piece being cleaned.

Covered with Heavy Layers of Grease

For fixtures near cooking areas in kitchens, to remove heavy layers of greasy buildup or dirt, Mr. Clean Top Job® works best for cleaning the stained glass. Apply the cleaner to a soft cloth, and wipe gently. After cleaning, reapply lemon-oil based furniture polish to the shade, for best results.
Your stained glass fixtures will gleam and transmit colored light they were designed to shine through them to beautify your room.

Tiffany Style Lamps - Louis Comfort Tiffany

!±8± Tiffany Style Lamps - Louis Comfort Tiffany

Tiffany style lamps were created by Louis Comfort Tiffany in the late 1800s. Louis Comfort Tiffany was the oldest son of Charles Tiffany, founder of the celebrated jewelry chain Tiffany and Company. Louis Comfort Tiffany was a painter and was considered by art experts as exceptionally talented with watercolors and oils. After traveling the world in his pursuit of fine art, he became immensely interested in Medieval glass and began to experiment with his own colored glass creations. This lead to an interest in interior design, which ultimately resulted in one of the most popular lamp styles in history; the Tiffany lamp.

In 1885, Louis Tiffany formed his own company, independent of his father, which focused almost entirely on the manufacturing of colored glass products. He used specific techniques to create panes that featured colors and tones not previously seen in household glass. He was well pleased when he found a way to manufacture his exceptionally beautiful stained-glass windows in miniature style. These were used in the production of what became the first Tiffany lampshades. Tiffany lamps were sold with filament bulbs that served to light the stained glass shades and produce an exquisite and unusual appearance wherever they were used.

The primary allure of Tiffany lamps is their uniqueness. When Louis Tiffany was alive, each lamp was hand assembled, which resulted in no two lamps looking exactly alike. In addition, diversity in the glass panels themselves made each lamp truly unique.

Original Tiffany lamps were produced until 1920, and since then, many companies have recreated these exceptionally beautiful lamps, which have never truly gone out of style. In 1958, when certain of Louis Tiffany's paintings were placed in various museums and private collections, his lamps gained dramatic popularity with art lovers worldwide. Currently, a genuine Tiffany lamp may cost as much as 2 million dollars.

The Tiffany style lamps seen in modern department stores have a very similar look to the lamps made in the 1800s by Louis Tiffany. This style typically features a base of polished brass and a decorative shade comprised of several panels of colored glass in different sizes and shapes. Some shade patterns are random while others Feature specific designs.

Trends in home interior design come and go, and what may have been popular five years ago is now obsolete. It is for this reason that many homeowners feel it is wise to select items that are regarded as timeless when decorating a home. Tiffany style lamps have a classic appeal that will never go out of style and they will add beauty and charm to any home in which they are placed.
